U.S. overd0se deaths are declining, with the CDC citing a decrease of nearly 27 percent in 2024. This reduction in overd0se deaths is not a coincidence—it’s the direct result of decades of organizing by people who use drugs. Maine Recovery Action Project has helped secure major policy wins, guided by the expertise of people who use drugs and those in recovery. They helped pass the nation’s most comprehensive Good Samaritan Law, as well as the legislation requiring Maine high schools to train students to use naloxone, setting up a special council which helps direct how half of Maine’s opioid settlement funds are spent, and much more.
