From a school in Abruzzo to
Miami: Another Divergent ArtWork
The Escape is a
painting on canvas created years ago by elementary school children in the
Abruzzo region of Italy. The theme is war and flight. Specifically, the
image of a mother venturing toward the horizon with her two children
evokes the tragic reality of Ukrainian refugees. The video clip, titled "The Last Artwork,"
documents the creation of this painting, which marked the conclusion of a
unique five-year journey.
These students are now entering high school. They were
guided through an artistic and creative process that would have been
impossible had their teacher simply adhered to the inconsistencies of a
standard curriculum. By the time they finished elementary school, they had
mastered perspective, painting techniques, vibrant color theory, and 3D
exploration. They were capable of performing logical and grammatical
analysis in English and discussing the legacy of Peggy Guggenheim. They
were educated in the culture of divergent
thinking and multiculturalism.
When their work was first exhibited at the "Porta
Della Terra" in San Salvo, Abruzzo, it was simultaneously presented as
an installation at Spectrum
Art Fair Miami—a major exhibition featuring artists from around
the world—and was featured in the ArtNow
official catalog.
