Request would fund removal of debris from site not reconstruction of bridge itself

Maryland has requested the “quick release” of $60m from the US government to cover the initial fallout from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore earlier this week.

The request for funding does not cover the reconstruction of the crippled bridge itself, but to instead remove shattered parts of the structure and deal with traffic in order to reopen Baltimore’s shipping channels.
