Finland froze Russians' asylum requests

1 year ago 67

The Finnish authorities temporarily froze the consideration of asylum requests of Russians fleeing the mobilization. This was reported by Helsingin Sanomat with reference to the official representative of the department, Juhi Simila.

How to explain Simila, this is due to the update of data for Russia. The Migration Service intends to collect additional information about social condition in the country. Officials plan to figure out how things are in Russia with human rights and the safety of citizens. The migration authorities should find out who exactly in Russia may be affected by mobilization and what are the consequences of refusing to go to war.

The update on the situation in Russia may close in a few weeks. Data collection began in the autumn. At the same time, the authorities do not want people who seek asylum in Finland to be persecuted in Russia.

In fact, the war in Ukraine greatly affects the number of people who seek asylum in Finland. The war also changed the reasons why the Russians are asked for help from the Finnish authorities. After the announcement of mobilization in Russia, many Russians came to Finland precisely to avoid conscription. The Migration Agency is currently waiting for the European Enhancement Agency to clarify whether refusal to participate in the war can be the reason to asylum.

Previously Norwegian authorities said they were not sure whether to grant asylum to Russians fleeing the mobilization. The immigration authorities suspended their decision-making regarding the applicants from Russia. Since the beginning of the war, the number of requests has grown tenfold, from 13 in 2021 to 294 in 2022.
