Fishing nations pledge shark, ray protection

Atlantic fishing nations have agreed to implement new measures for the protection of sharks and rays, according to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). However, advocacy groups argue that these measures are insufficient to safeguard these vulnerable species. The ICCAT also reduced quotas for heavily fished blue sharks, but the Shark League of the Atlantic and Mediterranean warns that the current catch levels are still too high for long-term sustainability. ICCAT has been criticized for failing to address climate change and protect other species.
