Former Iranian FM Zarif: Tehran's nuclear capabilities grew post-US withdrawal

Tehran has gained more nuclear capabilities since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Iran's Vice-President for Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zarif said that Iran poses no security threat to the world.

"I hope this time Trump will be more serious, focused, and realistic," Zarif added.

Beginning in 2006, the UN Security Council imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Iran's nuclear program. In 2015, many of these economic sanctions were suspended under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. However, in 2018, the US announced its withdrawal from the JCPOA and reinstated nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.
