Freedom Is Not Free: Lessons from a Year of War in Ukraine

Over the past year, Ukraine has shown the world what it means to fight for freedom and democracy. At the core of that effort has been the country’s civil society: the journalists, health workers, war crimes investigators, and activists who have strived for justice and peace even under the harshest circumstances. Open Society’s foundation in Ukraine—the International Renaissance Foundation—has supported over 500 non-governmental organizations that have been working throughout the war. Our commitment to these open society defenders has not wavered, and will continue as Ukraine looks toward rebuilding its country on an even stronger foundation.
