Friends of the Earth International at COP28 climate summit

5 months ago 38

Media advisory, 20 November 2023.

Friends of the Earth International, the world’s largest grassroots environmental federation, hosts an international delegation with spokespeople available from around the world at the UN climate talks in Dubai, 30 November–12 December 2023.

A just and equitable phaseout of all fossil fuels is urgently needed to stay within global warming limits. This starts with historical polluters, such as the US and Europe, doing their fair share of emissions reductions, and providing finance to support a just energy transition across the South, adaptation, and Loss and Damage.

Many of the proposals being pushed in this global policy space – notably in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement concerning carbon markets – are false solutions to the climate crisis, shown to harm communities and ecosystems while delaying real climate action. These include net zero, nature-based solutions, geoengineering, carbon markets, hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies.

Whilst present in Dubai, Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) will be connected to the climate justice movement worldwide, and standing in solidarity with oppressed peoples in the UAE and across the Middle East.
