Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) has dropped out as a contender for the House speakership, leaving the GOP field at seven.
"I will work with the next speaker on the ideas I have laid out so that Congress can come together and do the job the American people sent us here to do," he wrote in a statement announcing his withdrawal.
Palmer arrived in Congress in 2015 and chairs the Republican Policy Committee.
