Using her experience growing up under dictatorship in Kenya, Open Society’s L. Muthoni Wanyeki leads our work in Africa that is dedicated to fostering democracy and human rights. Our founder George Soros began his philanthropy in South Africa, funding university scholarships for Black South African students during apartheid. We continue to help movements expand possibilities for all people across Africa against the backgrounds of the legacies of colonialism and slavery, increases in debt and inflation, and the backsliding of democracy.
