Articles/Reports from Agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations Addressing Aspects of Climate Change

North Carolina Clean Transportation Plan, North Carolina Department of Transportation

The North Carolina Clean Transportation Plan (NCCTP) is a guidance document that provides a coordinated strategy for accelerating decarbonization in the transportation sector. The plan outlines how North Carolina can prepare for a clean transportation future and provide equitable outcomes for everyone. The NCCTP was co-created with local, regional and state agencies; transportation providers; non-profit organizations; social justice and equity-focused groups; environmentally focused groups; academic partners; clean cities coalitions; advocacy groups; utility providers; and private companies. While clean transportation efforts are happening all around our state, Executive Orders (E.O.) 80, 246, and 271 all encouraged a more coordinated strategy.

A Call to Action: Climate Resilient California Schools. Safeguarding Children’s Health and Opportunity to Learn in TK-12, Patel et al,, Stanford University

Once again, California stands on the future’s edge. As the Earth warms, Californians are confronting unprecedented heat, drought, wildfire, and flooding – among other effects of climate change. In response, the state is stepping forward as a leader in a global campaign to reduce emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gasses. California’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 is a visionary aim that compels both its technical ingenuity and its political will. Yet even as it races to claw back the causes of climate change, its children are emerging into a world where the effects are already as close as the air they breathe. In this urgent context, a statewide coalition of nearly 50 stakeholders – including doctors, medical and environmental health researchers, educators, youth, and community groups, and other experts – convened in 2021 to examine the challenges of climate change from the perspective of children’s health and education. The authors present a transformative vision for California schools that are climate-resilient and sustainable and lay out a path to realizing this vision.

Climate Change’s Four Irelands: An Audience Segmentation Analysis, Leiserowitz et al, Yale Program on Climate Change Communication

The authors conducted a nationally representative survey of public climate change beliefs, risk perceptions, policy preferences, and behavior in Ireland. The authors identified four distinct audiences based on views about climate change among the Irish public. The four climate audiences strongly differ on their knowledge, levels of worry, and willingness to take personal action on climate change. These audiences reflect a spectrum of views about climate change and are labelled as The Alarmed, Concerned, Cautious and Doubtful.

Impact of Green Hydrogen Production on the Availability of Clean Electricity for the Grid, M. Roetter and G. Richardson, Gas Transition Allies

Gas utilities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are proposing to use variable renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, to produce green hydrogen to replace various proportions of fossil methane (natural gas), now burned for heat in 1.3 million homes and hundreds of thousands of commercial buildings across the Commonwealth. In order to meet the goals of the Commonwealth’s Climate Action Roadmap, gas utilities or LDCs (local distribution companies) intend to use green hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG), pumped through the gas distribution system, to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) and other harmful emissions attributable to the building sector. The authors estimate the increase in the demand for clean electricity that would result from using green hydrogen as a replacement for varying proportions of the methane currently burned in buildings in Massachusetts versus a similar calculation using the option of electric-powered heat pumps. If this were to occur, they found that electric supply needs more than triple, electric demand rises, more turbines are required, and the green grid is delayed.

Obtaining articles without journal subscriptions

We know it's frustrating that many articles we cite here are not free to read. One-off paid access fees are generally astronomically priced, suitable for such as "On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light but not as a gamble on unknowns. With a median world income of US$ 9,373, for most of us US$ 42 is significant money to wager on an article's relevance and importance.

  • Unpaywall offers a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that automatically indicates when an article is freely accessible and provides immediate access without further trouble. Unpaywall is also unscammy, works well, is itself offered free to use. The organizers (a legitimate nonprofit) report about a 50% success rate
  • The weekly New Research catch is checked against the Unpaywall database with accessible items being flagged. Especially for just-published articles this mechansim may fail. If you're interested in an article title and it is not listed here as "open access," be sure to check the link anyway.

How is New Research assembled?

Most articles appearing here are found via  RSS feeds from journal publishers, filtered by search terms to produce raw output for assessment of relevance.

Relevant articles are then queried against the Unpaywall database, to identify open access articles and expose useful metadata for articles appearing in the database.

The objective of New Research isn't to cast a tinge on scientific results, to color readers' impressions. Hence candidate articles are assessed via two metrics only:

  • Was an article deemed of sufficient merit by a team of journal editors and peer reviewers? The fact of journal RSS output assigns a "yes" to this automatically.
  • Is an article relevant to the topic of anthropogenic climate change? Due to filter overlap with other publication topics of inquiry, of a typical week's 550 or so input articles about 1/4 of RSS output makes the cut.

The section "Informed opinion, nudges & major initiatives" includes some items that are not scientific research per se but fall instead into the category of "perspectives," observations of implications of research findings, areas needing attention, etc.
