Statement on German police raid on Berlin Palestine solidarity conference

2 weeks ago 32

We are appalled to see that German police have stormed into a conference in Berlin organised in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

There are reports of 2,000 police being mobilised to surround and attack the conference. They have attempted to stop the conference from being live streamed. At least one speaker, Ghassam Abu Sitha from Britain has been detained at Berlin airport.

The conference is organised by a broad coalition of German and European groups calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza.

The police action represents a shocking attack on the Palestine movement and an assault on basic rights of free speech.

It comes in the context of appalling levels of repressive acts by German authorities over many years, seeking to silence Palestinian voices and those advocating for the Palestinian people. Germany’s complicity in supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza has led to it being reported by Nicaragua to the ICJ . It was this history of complicity that the Conference was seeking to address.

We condemn the police actions and demand that the conference is allowed  to go ahead without further harrassment.
