Thousands of People in Denmark Are Being Evicted Due to a Set of Laws Called the “Ghetto Package”

Thousands across Denmark face eviction because of the “Ghetto Package,” a set of laws announced in 2018 that unfairly targets residents of racial and ethnic minorities. Under the legislation, an area that meets certain requirements, including whether most of its residents are classified as being of “non-Western background,” is labelled as a “ghetto” and subjected to a wide range of measures affecting housing, education, and criminal justice. Residents in Mjølnerparken in Copenhagen are challenging a plan to sell over 200 of their homes and have filed a lawsuit, supported by the Open Society Justice Initiative, that claims the plan is discriminatory.
