XR Tāmaki Mākaurau Newsletter for June 6 2023

Tena koe Friend,

VOTE:
VOTE CLIMATE

We know urgent action climate action is necessary. The science is clear. For decades the elite corporations have thwarted every intent and agreement.

This newsletter has actions you can join and new exciting initiatives. Working together there is hope. But the greatest opportunity right now is the General Election. We need to encourage everyone to vote and to vote climate. What this means varies in different electorates. People need to find how they can best get the Government most favourable for the urgent necessary climate action.

We are up against the strong opposition of the elite corporates operating in an unfettered capitalist economic environment. They will work the system to get a government that favours them. The 700 homes that are unliveable, homes flooded, homes with rising untenable insurance and families grieving for loved ones killed in the January floods and cyclone are merely collateral damage to the obscene profit making of the elites.

It is our responsibility at this time, to step up, do more, step beyond our comfort zone. It is only together that we can make the changes to minimize the climate crisis, to keep the planet liveable.

What you can do about the climate emergency card.

Global Strike Protesters with "Vote Climate" banner
May 26. What a fabulous Global Strike. Next one Sept 15.

Stop the Cuts:

This Thursday at 10 am sharp. Town Hall. The Mayor Wayne Brown is asking Council to vote on the proposed budget. This is the budget that does not build community nor address the climate crisis. The campaign to date has a small number of councillors wavering to vote against the Cuts. We need this last push to ensure it does not get through

Join the action of the coalition to Stop The Cuts.

Climate Shift

Three large activist organisations are initiating this campaign building into the election. Greenpeace, Oxfam and Forest and Bird. We are excited to see the building of a climate activist movement. So, we have joined them. There is a plan for the build up to the election with ten points for voters to expect of candidates.

Launch is Wednesday 14th at the Dalmatian Cultural Society, 10 New North Rd.

Tapatahi

Tapatahi: Coalition for a People’s Aotearoa.

A coalition, a vision and a petition for starters.

This new coalition of various groups, with their differing emphasis, methods and style, have worked patiently and collaboratively, with encouragement and support to get the coalition to this point. They are sharing a vision for what we as a country can build. They are starting with a petition (Please sign now!). There will be more.

Visit the website, where you will find:

  • Six bullet points that describe our shared vision
  • The origins of the name
  • The petition
  • Further information about the What, Why and How, of the changes we are seeking to collectively give weight to, as candidates are lobbied in the lead up to October.

The petition is a long read, because the interconnected changes being sought span Tiriti and Socio-Economic issues as well as responses to the Climate/Ecosystem Emergencies. We hope you will persevere and find considerable overlap with your own thinking within the broad sweep it contains. Here is a direct link to it Tapatahi Petition: Bring in the big changes that Aotearoa needs right now

You are invited to the Tapatahi Launch event on Sunday 25 June. This will be a hybrid online and in person event with hubs in Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke and Ōtautahi, where we’ll have activities and a panel of speakers. We also intend to stream it live. Learn more at tapatahi.nz

END Urban SUVs

www.endubansuvs.org

Urban SUVs are killing people, killing the planet, Aotearoa New Zealand is failing in emissions reductions commitment, and the clean care rebate isn’t enough.

Target your SUV. Go to rightcar.govt.nz, enter the number plate. It will show you its make and model, as well as a number of safety and environmental ratings including its carbon emissions rating.

The car stickers are being printed thanks to a generous loan to get this campaign started. Email EndUrbanSUVs@protonmail.com to get the stickers, and give a donation to help cover costs.

Restore Passenger Rail Action

Public Talk South Side: Climate Crisis and Civil Resistance

Manurewa Library Community Room, 7 Hill Road, Manurewa, Auckland 2102, New Zealand

Saturday June 10th 11am – 12.30. RSVP https://events.humanitix.com/welcome-talk-climate-crisis-and-civil-resistance-manurewa or just turn up!

Nau mai haere mai!

We know this is no time for empty promises: with no carbon budget left and ecological systems in free fall we have to ACT DECISIVELY!

Social science says we must rebel, COP27 shows international meetings cannot stop climate collapse. History shows that Civil Resistance movements, country by country, can. Together, we can.

Come and hear about the campaign to restore passenger rail and to get free public transport. Find out why some have chosen to step up into high-stakes action.

Come and hear climate activists and local people tell the truth about the climate crisis, and what we can do about it.

This session will discuss many things including how resisting injustice and standing up for what is right is a visceral, beautiful experience and part of what it means to be human at this time.
